This is the haunted house that Whittier wrote of. I have been past it but have not visited it at midnight to call on the ghost.

Note: The author mentioned in the handwritten note is John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892), a famous American fireside poet and abolitionist. Whittier grew up near Hampton, New Hampshire, and spent much of his career collecting local folklore. He wrote the famous 1843 poem, "The New Wife and the Old," which immortalized the haunting of this exact house.
The Old General Moulton House in Hampton, New Hampshire, was considered the quintessential haunted house of the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. The haunting stems from two major legends surrounding its original builder, Revolutionary War General Jonathan Moulton:
The Pact with the Devil: Local folklore labeled Moulton a "Yankee Faust." It was widely rumored that he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for having his boots filled with gold coins each month. Legend says he tried to cheat the devil by cutting the soles off his boots so the coins would fill the entire cellar, prompting the devil to burn down his original house in revenge.
The Ghost of Abigail Moulton: Shortly after his first wife, Abigail, died of smallpox, the General remarried a much younger woman and gifted her Abigail's expensive jewelry. According to Whittier's poem, on the couple's wedding night in the mansion's "Blue Chamber," the icy-cold ghost of Abigail appeared to strip the rings and bracelets back off the new wife's arms.
Following Moulton's death in 1787, subsequent owners reported heavy military boots stomping up and down the stairs, eventually forcing them to hold a community-wide exorcism to "lay" the General's spirit.
