COOLIDGE DAM, ARIZ. is on U. S. 180 between Globe and Safford. Maximum height above bed rock 260 ft. Crest length 580 ft. over the three domes and two buttresses, and each spillway is 150 ft. wide. The San Carlos Lake formed by the dam has a storage capacity of 1,200,000 acre-feet, sufficient water to cover the 100,000 acres in San Carlos Irrigation Project in Pinal County to a depth of 12 ft., four times the water required for one year’s need. Dam commenced Jan. 1927, completed Oct. 25, 1928. The reservoir when full will extend up the Gila and San Carlos Rivers for about 20 miles.

This scene represents the making of a Navajo rug in the Indians’ home or Hogan, which is done in the winter time. In summer, the weaving is done outdoors under the shade of a tree. After the wool has been sheared from the sheep, sorted and washed, it is carded, to make the fibers lie in one direction, which is here being done by the small girl in the center. It is then worked into a cord and wound upon a distaff, which is being done by the woman at the left. This operation is repeated many times until the cord has been twisted to the desired fineness and hardness. That which is to be red is then dyed. The last step is the weaving. The manner of weaving and the loom with an unfinished blanket, or rug, are shown at the right. These fabrics, of all wool, and entirely hand-made are becoming greatly appreciated for their wearing qualities no less than their striking beauty.

Derives its name from the likeness of the “Butte” or hill to an Elephant. It is but a short drive from the famous Hot Springs to the Dam, which creates a lake 40 miles in length, stocked with many varieties of game fish, and is well known as a “fisherman’s paradise.” The curative waters of the Hot Springs nearby, excellent fishing, and mild winters, make a year ’round resort for the 60,000 or more tourists who visit here annually. The Regatta each spring is a special attraction.

Covering 270 square miles, the Great White Sands form the most unusual playground in the Scenic Southwest. This gigantic sandpile, dazzling white, resembles a vast snow field. It is composed of 95 per cent pure gypsum and lies 18 miles west of Alamogordo, N. M., on State Highway No. 3. The dunes are from 5 to 75 feet high.

The King’s Palace
The King’s Palace of Carlsbad Caverns National Park, 765 feet underground, has been rated as the most beautiful Chamber of this underground wonderland. The floor is circular in shape, almost 200 feet in diameter, and is comparatively smooth, quite in contrast with the ceiling which is entirely covered with the various forms of stalagtites, especially the sheet stalactite such as the Guillotine. On the left may be seen a stalactite and stalagmite which are now separated only by the space of a calling card and within a few years this will grow together forming a column.

Named after T. W. Gregory, active alumnus of the University. This auditorium seats 9,600, with a very large stage equipped in most modern manner including scenery and public address system. Floor and stage used for basketball and tennis. Splendid swimming pool, locker rooms and showers for men.

YOSEMITE FALLS. The greatest cataract of the Sierras is Yosemite Falls. This vast volume of white water plunges 2600-feet—a half mile. The first fall is 1600 feet, a sheer descent, then comes a series of cascades, partly hidden, 600 feet downward, and a final leap straight down of 400 feet. The stream is about 35 feet wide at the top of the falls, and the roar of its waters is heard all over the valley.
