The world famous Cascades were built by The William and Matilda Sparks Foundation and were first operated May 9, 1932. The Cascades were operated nightly throughout the summers until they were forced to close down during the War. Following the death of Mr. Sparks they were donated to the County of Jackson. Jackson, Mich.

We are in Alamogordo N. Mex. Are going to White Sands Nat'l. Monu. tomorrow, then I guess on over to Carlsbad. We have no definite plans. Don't know whether we'll go to Juarez or not!

CITY OF ROCKS, Southwest New Mexico. Wind, rain and water did some mighty fancy carving when they chiseled out faces, caves, windows and portholes. These great rocks, some standing carefully balanced, lean carelessly or tumble about casually.

Newport Beach, 5/10/76—
Hello,
We're eating our way to meet Todd. Decided to give this trip another try. So far 1 & 101 have been quite calm in spite of rain today. Never have seen so many wild flowers & so much (wild?) Scotch broom by the acre—from Cloverdale to Mendocino to here. Saw traffic, including us, stop for a mother duck & many babies crossing the high-way near here. This has been a great trip.

This Ely Green Stone is the largest drilled core sample in the World. Diameter: 5 feet 6 inches; Height: 12 feet; Weight: 24 tons. Drilled for the Vermillion Mining Co. by Pickands Mather & Co. in 1938 at the Zenith Mine near Ely, Minn. Ely Green Stone is classified by Geologists as one of the oldest known rocks on earth.

Hi — We have seen ice and snow everyplace since Wednesday. We were snowbound in Oklahoma Thursday — as the highways were a sheet of ice. The snow is beautiful though! Floyd has had a deep chest cold — and he had to see a doctor as soon as we arrived here. He's taking antibiotics, so we hope he'll be okay, so we can drive to Eldon tomorrow.

The superb structure is a fitting tribute to a great man, Abraham Lincoln. It is of classic Greek architecture, and the colonnade of 36 columns represent the 36 states, which comprised the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. Inside this beautiful temple is the monumental statue of Lincoln by Daniel French.

Maam Cross is just a crossroad w/a gift shop, bar/tea shop & petrol station. We passed thru yesterday en route to lovely, little Clifden where we stayed at an inn w/hospitality unbelievable. The town is woodsy & today we saw trees & plants, lakes, rivers & streams overwhelming!

MAAM CROSS, CONNEMARA, CO. GALWAY
Connemara is the name given to the western portion of Co. Galway which lies between Lough Corrib and the Atlantic. It is a region of superb scenic grandeur, dominated by the rocky mountain range known as the Twelve Bens. Connemara has inspired many famous paintings and a tour of this district is indeed a memorable experience. In the Maam Cross area the famous Connemara Ponies are particularly numerous and an Annual Pony Fair is held there each October.

ALIBATES FLINT QUARRIES NATIONAL MONUMENT
Greetings From Texas

For 12,000 years, the ancient inhabitants of North America were drawn to an area north of Amarillo, where they could gouge the prized Alibates flint from the earth to chip it into tools and weapons. Even today, the pock-marked hills where the flint was mined attract visitors. Preserved as the Alibates Flints Quarries National Monument, the site provides modern man a chance to examine the traces of one of the first industries in the New World.
