The San Jacinto Memorial Shaft erected at historic San Jacinto Battlefield, near Houston, is an enduring tribute to the heroes of that great conflict who estab- lished the independence of the Republic of Texas. The Shaft which is 564 feet in height is taller than the Washington Monument. The San Jacinto Memorial includes a museum of Houston and Texas history, art hall and other public meeting places.

The Kemper Military School has four years of high school and two years of junior college, all fully accredited by the North Central Asso- ciation of Colleges and Secondary Schools. It has regularly been designated an Honor School by the War Department. While the school is over eighty years old, most of the equipment is less than twelve, including a large fire-proof barrack (seen in the picture) accommodating over 200 cadets, a two-story gymnasium 100 x 200 feet, a modern swimming pool, 25 x 60 feet, and a new athletic field.

This is the famed cheese market from the likes of which your cheese comes from. The tower in the rear holds a carillon that seemed to play for the entire time we were there. The Oldest City in the United States
Spanish Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest complete masonry fortification remaining in continental U. S. Construction was started in 1672. Its 16-foot-thick walls are built of coquina, a natural shellrock quarried on nearby Anastasia Island. The Castillo withstood major English attacks in 1702 and 1740, and in its later years as a prison held many men famous in U. S. history.

A typical compartment in one of the modern 1000-person recruit barracks, USNTC, Great Lakes, is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, 35 miles north of downtown Chicago and four miles from Waukegan. This facility was established in 1911, and is the oldest and largest of its kind in the U.S. Its essential role is the recruit training of new inductees and the operation of service schools for student Navy personnel.

We arrived here the 16th. Rested one day.
Then to Arlington, Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln, FOOD, and the Pavilion. I love being a tourist! Having fun. love B & W
