Ich habe gehört, daß die Berta nicht [mehr] fromm und ganz ehrlich und aufrichtig geworden ist. Liebe Frau, Gott ist dir immer in deinem Herz, und im Unglück werde [ich] geholfen. Hast mit seinen großen Gnaden bei dir gewonnen, und deine, die deine großen Trost und Hilfe werden. Zufrieden, wenn er das [so] will.
Dear Mrs. Stellwag,
I am writing you a few lines because I come to see you rather seldom, and I received something while I was with you. I have heard that Berta has not remained devout, honest, and sincere. Dear lady, God is always in your heart, and in misfortune you will be helped. Through His great mercy you have gained comfort, and those close to you will be a great consolation and help. Be content if that is His will.
(This one is considerably harder to read than the others.)
My dear friend, I believe that I have been with your dear husband, and I have not forgotten that either. Now, once again, through the help of our dear God and by His grace, it remains with me. We wish one another that our later years may be better than those up to now, while we are still in our better years. May the dear Lord grant us some contentment and allow us to spend a little time together. Perhaps He will bring us together again when old age comes, along with our children and an old friend from home. Greetings from your old friend to your husband.

The refectory is located on the shore of the south pond, east from Center Street entrance to the park. It contains a large dining hall, with a lunch room beneath flanked by two dining terraces which command a splendid view of the South Pond and adjoining lawns. The hall is available for dances and social fnctions and the service in the restaurant compares favorably with the best down town hotels.

SUGAR LOAF, Mackinac Island, Mich. This is a huge cone-shaped rock rising 90 feet amidst the forest. The agency of water in the sculpture of this rock is clearly manifest, as if to conform to old Indian legend of the Island's rising from the lake. Scientists tell us that some period of geologic time Sugar Loaf must have been submerged beneath the sea.

This is where we were Today. We rented a jeep for the day & drove up to Mismaloya where the ruins from the set of the movie "Night of the Iguana" are. The water is really this blue and it's so salty you float easy. Everything is real cheap too - our room was 10$ and the presidential suite is 12$. Love You Barbi

Went to this Museum yesterday in Brighton. Brighton is a very beautiful beach resort town. It's off- season so it was nice and empty. Just a few people. You would have loved to see all the antique toys they had. I saw some things that you have. Write again later. Love Barbi

Well I made it but that was the longest air- plane ride you could ever imagine! 9 hours and 45 minutes. London looks just like all the pictures you've seen, all the bldgs & houses are brick. As you're flying in you see all the rooftops are red. I'm staying with my friend Stephen but by the time you get this I'll be gone. They call 7-Up lemonade here and they don't have lemonade as we know it. It's so beautiful here. It's not today, about 75° only a few clouds.
A lot of people ride bicycles to & from work - in their suits. Driving on the left side of the road is a new adventure to be sure. All the cars are different from ours, as well. I hope you got my package explaining why I'm here or else you're probably wondering. It's real expensive to call. I have to get a phone card first.

Some of the fast food things they have here are McDonalds, Dominos Pizza, Wimpy's Hamburgers and Tower Records. Everything else is different. To use the telephone you buy a phone card for £5 or £10 and stick it in the phone and it ticks off the minutes you've used, there are still some of the old Red Telephone Kiosks that take coins but not many. To figure money, you multiply £1 x 1.7 so one pound is $1.70. Expensive too!

After thirteen days of blue skies and sun it has finally turned grey & cold. But I still love it! Tonight we ate in my favorite Indian restaraunt called The Bombay Cuisine. I had chicken- tikka (curry), pilau rice, keema nan (sort of a soft warm pita bread), raita (cucumbers in yoghurt), cauliflower bhaji, chick-pea masala and dal (lentil soup). Everything was unbelievably delicious. I could start loving it as much as mexican food! There's as many Indian restaraunts as Mex back home. Today I took the tube downtown to the world's largest bookstore called Foyles. It has 3 miles of shelves. Whole rooms on a subject. You could never see it all! It was a tall building w/ a basement. Monday afternoon my friend Alan & I went to a tennis match/barbeque and the day before to Hampstead-Heath. Send some sun! Love Barbi

This is what the Tube system looks like. You can see how easy it is to get around. I bet this card gets to you faster since I put this air mail sticker on it. I heard if you don't mark it airmail they put it on the slow boat to China. It's real hot again - 85° for the past 5 days - that's a record-breaker here. I've been getting a good tan out on the common.

Well I made it here ok. I start school tomorrow. Its very very hot here. The family I'm staying with is real nice. They have 2 sons and 2 daughters. I'm sharing a room with a French girl, who luckily for me, speaks English. But we're not allowed to speak English, we have to whisper it or else we have to put a coin in the "fine box". She knows more Spanish than me. Will write more later on.

This is Plaza Mayor where we always go. It's not always as crowded as this, on this picture it was a special fiesta. All around the bottom of the square are different cafes and you just sit around and drink and watch the people go by. My roommate, Natasha has been explaining to me how to tell what country people are from by their clothes and shoes. It's very interesting to just sit and people watch.

I can't thank you enough for making it possible for me to go to Spain. I'm having a wonderful time and learning alot of Spanish. School is really fun and the people are very nice. Sorry I haven't written more but I'm so busy studying. Its still very hot every day and I haven't found any food I like except eggs and bread. Hoping all is well at home.

Last night I went to see a Flamenco band. It was really wonderful. Everything starts late here, that show began at 11pm. During the day there's no one but students on the street, the city is having their siesta. Then around 8pm the streets are filled with people. Restaurants and bars stay open till 4am.

It was really good older things than I've ever seen - from 1300's, paintings & sculptures. Wish you could have been there.
